The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Klarman Building is a state-of-the-art 385,000 sq ft inpatient facility that sets a new standard for both patient-centered care and sustainability.
Public spaces were carefully designed to create a warm and welcoming visitor atmosphere. Indirect lighting provides a low glare environment; visual contrast is created by accenting specialty finish materials. Linear direct lighting is used along the edge of the spaces to provide the necessary light levels while reducing direct view glare.
A key goal for patient rooms was to create a restful and rejuvenating environment for patients, while also meeting the needs of the patients’ families and hospital staff. The family areas along the windows feature custom linear LED uplight fixtures providing general illumination from a discrete source. A simple user interface with clearly identified control zones allows staff and patients to adjust lighting to their preferences. The room devices communicate with a sophisticated lighting control system on the backend for whole building scheduling, etc.
For exteriors, the design brief was to create a seamless visual experience along the entire façade, where every window bay appears as a façade unit. We achieved this by integrating multiple lighting fixtures and mounting details in a way that creates a uniform composition, despite the varying architectural features within.
The rooftop terrace is a tranquil oasis featuring comfortable lighting that gently highlights the landscape, creating a calming atmosphere promoting relaxation and rejuvenation with minimal light trespass.
The Klarman Building's lighting design delivers a peaceful atmosphere that supports patient well-being. The project achieved LEED Gold certification, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability. The design team vetted and tracked fixture pricing throughout the process, allowing for on-time and within-budget completion of the project. The result is truly exceptional—the building lighting system shines with both functionality and beauty.
