Dartmouth Hall

Dartmouth Hall, long considered the historic and emotional heart of Dartmouth College, underwent its most comprehensive renovation ever. While the building’s iconic exterior was preserved, the interior was transformed to support a more inclusive and accessible academic experience. Today, it houses classrooms, language department offices, and the new Center for Humanities.

Lighting throughout the building was carefully integrated to support both modern academic functions and the building’s legacy as a symbol of academic continuity. In teaching spaces, light enhances visual acuity and comfort while maintaining a timeless sensibility. New exhibition areas feature interpretive displays that explore Dartmouth’s evolution—from its Indigenous foundations and architectural rebuilds to coeducation and the growing diversity of its student body.

Lighting for these interpretive displays subtly supports the story being told while remaining sensitive to the conservation criteria required for historic artifacts. Aligning with the project’s broader goals of access and inclusion, the lighting contributes to a renewed sense of openness and welcome. Dartmouth Hall now stands as both a deeply rooted landmark and an adaptable space for the College community.
