La Nube STEAM Discovery Center | Architecture
The lighting design for La Nube in El Paso, Texas, enhances its bold architectural form—a cloud-shaped volume floating atop a glass pedestal. This 70,000 sqft STEAM discovery center invited a design approach that celebrated imagination while supporting functionality and accessibility. Integrated seamlessly into the playful geometry, the lighting reinforces the building’s identity and elevates the visitor experience.
Exterior lighting draws inspiration from the night sky, with over 2,100 fiber optic points embedded in the façade, creating a twinkling “starry night” effect. Each point was meticulously placed and calibrated for even illumination. DMX controls enable custom programming, aligning the building’s glowing presence with city-wide events and activities.
Inside, lighting is tailored to support both immersive play and neurodiverse accessibility. Exhibition luminaires are individually DMX-controlled, allowing for a “low-stimulus mode” with softened dynamics and reduced saturation. This flexible infrastructure ensures inclusivity while maintaining visual cohesion throughout the space.
Sustainability anchors the design: energy-efficient LEDs and precision scheduling systems reduce environmental impact without compromising quality. The result is a visually compelling, equitable, and forward-thinking lighting design that harmonizes with the architecture and mission of La Nube.
